CITYLAB 2021 - BALTIMORE - FELLS POINT
Be In It
"If you want to go fast, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together."
UNIQUELY BALTIMORE
A Livable and Sustainable Community
Fells Point has a long history, even predating the city of Baltimore. While arguably a current success story in a city of over 250 neighborhoods, problems with racism and inequity have plagued the city structurally for centuries, such as the segregation ordinances of 1910. Efforts to improve the reputation of the city at-large go back to the 1970's. Southern Fells can provide a model for Northern Fells, but it must be planned in an equitable manner, lest mistakes are to be repeated.

Inclusive Prosperity
In Southern Fells, piers and stones line the streets. The stones are not "cobble" stones but "ballast" stones. These ballast stones were originally used to help weight ships as they were emptied at the ports. When cargo was loaded, the excess stones were then used to pave the streets. Today there are large construction projects across Southeast Baltimore. How will this prosperity be distributed equitably and in a manner that allows for greater sustainability?
